Le Petite Messe Solennelle
May 9, 2020
Performances at 2 PM and 5 PM
These concerts are presented in collaboration with
San Miguel Institute of Bel Canto
Gioachino Rossini's Petite messe solennelle (Little solemn mass) was written in 1863 and will be presented in its original scoring for choir, opera soloists, two pianos and harmonium with Mauro Ledesma, conductor. Rossini, who had retired from composing operas more than 30 years before, described this work as "the last of my péchés de vieillesse" (sins of old age) but it is a dramatic work which never fails to please, with a decidedly operatic approach to the words of the solemn mass. The eight soloists include some of the finest young opera singers of Mexico, all of whom have been trained through the Bel Canto Institute. Keyboardists will include pianists Malcolm Halliday and the German opera conductor Myron Romanul. Also on the program will be Fauré's enchanting Cantique de Jean Racine.
Please note that each performance will be around two hours in length, including an intermission
